Welcome to AstracorASTRACOR was established in 2006 as a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation to offer training and support services to residential construction workers. It began with a discretionary Workforce Investment Act grant from the Governor of Virginia, and has since been coupled with a Kellogg Foundation grant for the establishment of a SkillsUSA chapter, and a grant from Hispanics in Philanthropy. The synergy of sponsorship from these organizations has resulted in the localized promotion of professionalism, trade excellence, and personal accountability within the industry. With this formula, ASTRACOR caught the attention of business and industry leaders in Northern Virginia and has initiated a successful training and certification program – hundreds of workers have been trained to date, and almost two thousand members have been certified in accordance with their verifiable trade skills. ASTRACOR has also successfully become a clearinghouse for minorites and immigrants who seek career information, job placement, and/or support services. ASTRACOR’s skills, business, and “green job” academies all stress our training model of industry-driven skill methodology, VA DPOR-approved contractor preparation, and the promotion of professionalism through SkillsUSA. ASTRACOR has moved to its next level with its growth and expansion into the ‘Green Jobs’ arena through its affiliation and certification with the Building Performance Institute (BPI), the Virginia Sustainable Building Network (VSBN), and the Green Jobs Alliance (GJA). We will collaborate and partner with the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), regional Workforce Investment Boards (WIBs), employment service agencies and charitable non-profits who conduct training, placement, and/or associated support services. This direction allows ASTRACOR to develop innovative methods and combine them with proven best practices in order to implement initiatives and programs which will enhance the career development and earning capacity of our members via training, support services, job placement, and advocacy.
